Thomas James Kirby, Jr., 96, (Bourne), passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at JML Care Center in Falmouth, MA. He was the beloved husband of the late Patricia Bemis Kirby, who died on November 26, 2009.

Gracious and kind to all, Tom Kirby showed a genuine interest in others, and above all else deeply loved family, friends, God and country. Semper Fi.

Tom was the loving and beloved father of three daughters “Cindy, Vicki and Cathy”: Cynthia West and her husband, John of Mashpee, MA, Virginia Boyle and her husband, Kenneth of Bristol, RI and Catherine Kirby of Gloucester, MA. He was the adoring grandfather of Alex West, Kimberly Colucci (and her husband Steve), Ryan O’Connell (and his wife Tyler), and Cordelia Boyle. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Preston and Thomas Colucci. Tom was predeceased by his granddaughter Caitlin O’Connell.

The son of Laura and Thomas Kirby Sr., Tom was born in Conimicut, RI and grew up in Attleboro, MA. The eldest of seven, he was predeceased by brothers Lauren, Gordon and Russell, and sisters Irene and Marie. He is survived by his sister Gladys Brander of Attleboro and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Tom earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Fitchburg State College and a Master’s Degree from Bridgewater State College in Education. He taught Industrial Arts in Attleboro and Foxboro and became the Assistant Superintendent for Attleboro Public Schools. Later, Tom and Pat taught at Cairo American College in Egypt.

As a Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps during WWII, Tom served his country as a gunner in a dive-bomber in the VMSB-333 squadron. Called back to active duty in the Korean War, he became a Master Sergeant and then was promoted to Technical Sergeant.

Pat and Tom raised their daughters in Attleboro, retired to Falmouth, and then moved to Mashpee. They spent many years wintering in Live Oak R.V. Resort in Arcadia, FL playing golf and making lifelong friends. Tom spent his remaining years at Cape Cod Senior Residence in Pocasset, MA.

Tom was a proud member of the Waquoit Congregational Church in East Falmouth and the Second Congregational Church in Attleboro where he served as both moderator and deacon.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

  • Tom was the epitome of a gentleman and a very gracious and kind man. I feel very honored to have him consider me a friend. Through all the years I’ve known him, he always had a kind note or card that he was sent to me. I treasured our friendship through the many years I knew him.He truly was one of God’s angels here on earth. Well done, good and faithful servant, Tom. Rest well with your family and your Lord.

  • To the family of Thomas James Kirby, Jr., I am so sorry for your loss. He will be deeply missed & most assuredly has already united with Pat, surviving more than a decade without his life partner. Thank you for sharing this kind, loving man with his infectious smile & hearty laugh. Fortunate to enjoy family BBQs, pool parties, yard sales & more, I was moved when he’d say “you’re like my 4th daughter!” I felt like family, invited to “a weekend at the Kirbys” for their 2nd daughter’s wedding. Through the hustle & bustle of getting the house, yard, pool area AND wedding party ready for the occasion, it was an experience! And on the morning Vicki & Ken were to be married, I watched “Tom” from across the yard ~ beaming with joy & delight at witnessing it come together. He holds a special place in all of our hearts. I know love and faith will guide you, and trust fond memories to comfort you during this difficult time. Love, Genevieve

  • Tom was such an endearing gentleman only wish I had spent more time with him especially to go over Pats side of family. God Bless

  • He was my second Dad, and I loved him so.  Such a special person, and accomplishments like crazy.  I am comforted to know that he’s finally with the love of his life, Pat, and all his brothers Loren, Gordon (my Dad) Irene, Marie & Russell. Cindy, Vicki & Cathy – love you all and I am praying for you and your families.  Love, Laura (“Laura Jean”)!
