Sandra J. McKay, age 72, passed away peacefully May 6, 2024. She was born February 24, 1952, in Boston, Massachusetts to Dante and Doris Bonito. On May 27, 1977, she married the love of her life, David McKay, who preceded her in death in 2009.
Sandy loved to love people. She spent her career working as a counselor and case manager in the mental health field for group homes run by Pine Street Inn for thirty years from 1989 until she retired in 2019. Sandy had the gift of being able to earn the trust, respect, and friendship of both colleagues and clients, making lifelong relationships with those she met throughout her career. She was always willing to help, putting others above herself without complaint, and spent a lifetime making sure others were well taken care of.
Though Sandy loved her career, there is no doubt that her role of mother and even more so grandmother, were her favorite. As a mother she was supportive and kind, always offering gentle guidance to her children on how best to navigate through life’s many complicated choices. She was always involved with her children’s many activities never missing a chance to volunteer in classrooms, or at the fields. She attended every soccer game, softball and baseball game, school play and concert, and graduations from preschool through graduate school.
Nothing gave her more joy than spending time with her four granddaughters. Pride for her granddaughters beamed from her and she would tell anyone who listened that her girls were the absolute light of her life. She happily spent her free time and retirement being babysitter, chauffer, playmate, and number one fan at their sporting and school events.
Sandy is survived by her son Michael McKay and his wife Christine McKay of Franklin, Massachusetts; her daughter Jennifer Sloan and her husband Adam Sloan of Mansfield, Massachusetts; her granddaughters Gabrielle McKay, Katherine McKay, Hannah Sloan, and Avery Sloan; brother Richard Bonito of Nashua, New Hampshire; niece Carrie Rose of Murietta, California, and nephew Richard Bonito of New York, New York.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the SPERRY & MCHOUL FUNERAL HOME, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro. A funeral service in celebration of Sandy’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 10:00 AM in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, 45 Fairview Avenue, Hyde Park, at which time she will be laid to rest with her late husband, David. Relatives and friends are most kindly invited to Sandy’s celebration of life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a charity that Sandy regularly donated to.
