Neal J. Harmon, 48, on June 10, 2024

Neal Joseph Harmon crossed over and slipped through the veil on June 10, 2024. Neal is the son of Paula Mary Harmon and the late Glenn Clarence Harmon. Neal often spoke of his reunion with his father with tender eager but was adamant and committed to “living this one life.”

He was born on January 23, 1976 in the Triboro area and grew up primarily in North Attleboro, MA which he called his home town. He attended St. Mary’s Sacred Heart School, North Attleboro Public Schools, the Community College of Rhode Island and most recently was working on becoming a Substance Abuse Counselor at UMASS in Boston, MA. Among his accomplishments, Neal worked on launching a Facebook page for LGBTQ people in recovery which he started during the pandemic as he felt worried about community members in isolation. He would have been deeply touched and appreciative of the group dedicating their next 24 hours of sobriety on Neal’s behalf when learning of his passing.

Neal was a creative thinker, artist, photographer and someone who loved to make people laugh. He enjoyed being the life of the party, center of the amusements, and seeing beyond the obvious. He wasn’t afraid to pack-up and leave town and literally work for the circus in New York for a short period of time. And no, he did not play the role of “clown” but certainly did for his biggest fans who he leaves behind: nieces, Ainsley and Shaye Bonds-Harmon as well as nephew Keegan Bonds-Harmon. His laughter and enthusiasm to make them smile came in many forms. He almost sunk the trampoline jumping to low-sinking-heights as the buoyancy of his belly kept him from getting too far off the ground on one memorable occasion. He would stammer at drive thrus and impersonate many different people as he ordered very grand drinks at the expense of his sister, Heather Bonds-Harmon and sister in-law Meredith Bonds-Harmon. He was also quick to share a photo and show how much his son, Ethan Carlen, shared in his boyishly good looks.

In addition to his quests for laughter, Neal was someone who was not afraid to show his sensitivity, love, care, and desire to protect others. At times this came in the form of visits with his grandmother, Mary Rupert, to enjoy conversations about times past. These conversations often included reflections of many loved ones who had gone before him. These loved ones included his great aunt Dorothy Falciano, Aunt Dot Yankee, Libby Stadler, Colleen Lovejoy, grandfathers Clarence Harmon and George Raymond as well as a close cousin Michelle Lowe.

Neal was not a traditional person in many ways, but specifically Neal was prideful in who he called family. Among his closest loved ones were Michael Alex, Gena Gambuto, Melville Petrosky, and Jeffrey Matson. He is predeceased within this last year by one of his best friends and supporters, Colleen (Miller) Chichanowski. Neal also had close relationships with many aunts, uncles, and cousins but among them his relationship with his Aunt Karen Harmon was one to be treasured as she watched many years of his life closely while he was growing up.

For a very extended view of Neal’s family, please see his father’s obituary. Private joke that can’t be helped.

The passing of Neal has been unexpected and has left many with questions. To be certain, Neal is someone who worked hard over and over again to get back up and keep trying. He taught many great lessons on what it means to love someone unconditionally. It is with great hope and expectation that Neal leaves this world with the idea that surrender has more to do with love than it does hate. He will be missed beyond words.

Relatives and friends are most kindly invited to join in celebrating Neal’s life on Sunday, June 30, 2024, beginning with a visitation period from 2:00 to 4:00 PM in the Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 PM in the funeral home. Interment will be private.
