Mary Evelyn Stearns, 87, a resident of Plainville for the past 57 years, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Alliance Health at Maples in Wrentham, MA, with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Raymond Earl Stearns, to whom she was wed on July 10, 1966.

Born in Rochester, MA, on April 20, 1937, Mary was the loving daughter of the late John Rosa Sylvia and Evelyn (Ennes) Sylvia. She grew up in Rochester and Middleboro, MA, and graduated from Middleboro High School in 1955. Mary furthered her education by earning a bachelor’s degree in education from Bridgewater State College.

Mary dedicated ten years of her life to teaching in Millis, where she taught physical education and history at the junior high and high school levels. She also coached cheerleading, basketball, field hockey, and softball. Mary was a Girl Scout leader and an avid reader who enjoyed books from all genres. She found joy in knitting, sewing, and was a great cook known for her famous beef stew. Mary loved family vacations to Cape Cod, including day trips to the canal, and camping trips with her family, even if she did so reluctantly.

Together with her daughter Sheryl, Mary wrote a memoir documenting her life from birth to marriage, a treasured book loved by her grandson. Her favorite times were spent in the company of her adoring family, particularly her grandson.

In addition to her beloved husband, Raymond “Earl,” Mary is survived by her devoted daughters: Sheryl S. Martel and her companion Paul Nett of Plainville; and Kathleen Stearns, also of Plainville. She leaves behind her cherished grandson James Martel and his companion Alison Cavalieri of Attleboro. She is also survived by her sister, Lorraine Chapman of Mansfield, and many nieces and nephews. Mary was the dear sister of the late Katherine Chartrand of Croghan, NY, and John Sylvia of Middleboro, MA.

Mary’s funeral service and her interment at Shepardville Cemetery in Plainville will be held privately.
