Leo G. Denis (Ret. AFD), 99, on March 7, 2023

Leo George Denis, a long-time resident of Attleboro, West Dennis, and North Attleboro and for the past seven years a resident at Maples Nursing Home in Wrentham, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at the age of 99 years and 11 months.  He was the beloved husband of Lillian (Dumas) Denis.

He was born on April 8, 1923 in the Hebronville section of Attleboro to Ethel Mary (Mack) Denis and Leo Joseph Denis.

As a young man, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Western Massachusetts and Rawlins, Wyoming.

In 1941, Leo met the love of his life, Lillian.  They married October 16, 1943 at St. Joseph Church in Attleboro.

A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he served his country during World War II for 2 years and 9 months in Tinian, Saipan and Iwo Jima.

He was a thirty year veteran of the Attleboro Fire Department and was also a house painter for many years.

During retirement at the Cape, he learned the art of carving ducks and shore birds and has left these beautiful carvings to both children and grandchildren to treasure.

Leo and Lillian enjoyed travels to Italy, Portugal, Jerusalem, Medjugorje, Canada, Nova Scotia, Hawaii, Bermuda, Arizona and Florida.

He was a loving father to his three daughters, a caring and fun Grandpa to seven and great Grandpa to eleven.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Stanhope and Dorothy Wilde and son-in-law David McInerney (December 2022).  He is survived by his loving wife Lillian of 79 years,  his brother John Denis,  daughters Susan J. McInerney, Charlene Harrison(Wayne), and Michelle Kelly (Dennis), grandchildren Kevin McInerney (Nicole), Sara Corcoran (Christopher) Kathleen Leighton (John), Matthew Harrison (Gail), Andrew Harrison (fiancée Lauren ), Thomas Kelly and Robert Kelly (Ursola); great grandchildren Cameron, Olivia, Mia, Jacob, Amelia, Emma, Benjamin, Madison, Landon, Chace, Nolan.

Visitation will be held at the Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro on Monday, March 20, 2023 from 9:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 10:30 a.m. in St. Martha Church, 227 South St. Plainville, MA.  Interment with United States Marine Corps and Attleboro Fire Department honors will be in St. Mary Cemetery, North Attleboro.

The family requests no flowers (due to allergies) but in memory of Leo, one may send a gift to Hope Health Hospice & Palliative Care, 1085 No. Main St. Providence, R. I. 02904-5719 or a charity of one’s choice.

The family wishes to thank with so much love and gratitude the hard-working loving and compassionate Nursing Staff, Unit Secretary, Certified Nursing Assistants, Activities staff on Newport Unit of Maples Nursing Home and the Pastoral Ministry Staff from St. Mary Parish in Wrentham.  We also send our thanks and gratitude to the Hospice Staff who helped care for Leo in his final days.
