Vincent J. Hoye, Jr., Age 88, Correctional Educator
North Attleborough – Vincent J. Hoye, age 88, formally of Old Post Road North Attleborough, a nationally known correctional educator died on Friday, August 19, 2022, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Sheila (Maloney) Hoye for 59 years.
Born in Boston on September 15, 1933, he was the son of the late Vincent J. and Eleanor (Walsh) Hoye. Raised in Dorchester Lower Mills, he was a graduate of Hyde Park High School.
He was a veteran of the Korean War serving as an aviation metal smith and airship rigger in the United States Navy.
An honor graduate of Stonehill College where he was senior class president, he held three graduate degrees, two from the University of Massachusetts.
Subsequent to college he was in the public relations business in New York and Boston with Medical Research Associates and Hoye and Giroux. His clients included Warner Lambert, Shulton, Miles Labs, and Ocean Spray Cranberries.
In the seventies, he was the owner of the New England Lobster Systems and installed large scale live lobster storage systems throughout America.
A licensed refrigeration technician and master pipefitter, Mr. Hoye was an instructor at the Tri County Regional Vocational and Technical School.
Mr. Hoye was a member of the Massachusetts Bureau of Pipefitters, Refrigeration Technicians and Sprinkler Fitters have been initially appointed by Governor Edward J. King and twice reappointed by Governor Michael S. Dukakis.
He joined the Massachusetts Department of Correction as Coordinator of Vocational Programs and rose to become the Director of Inmate Education and Training.
While with the Department of Correction, Mr. Hoye became nationally known for the many innovated inmate training programs that he instituted. Later he served as the Deputy Superintendent of the Virginia Department of Correctional Education.
In 1992 he co-founded the American All Tech Institute to provide training programs to houses of correction, jails, and juvenile detention facilities.
A founding member of the Sean MacBride Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in North Attleborough, and the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, Mr. Hoye held dual citizenship in the Republic of Ireland.
Mr. Hoye was keenly interested in historical aviation and had visited many aircraft museums and air shows in North America and Europe. He was a member of the American Air Museum in England, the Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida, and the National Air, the Space Museum in Washington, DC, and the Lighter Than Air Society in Akon, Ohio.
Mr. Hoye served North Attleborough for many years in many capacities. He was a member of the Tri-County Regional Technical and Vocational School board, Library Trustee, and Civil Defense Director. A member of numerous town committees, and he researched and wrote the Town’s Economic Development Plan and was instrumental in the creation of the Tri-Boro Industrial Park utilizing federal funds.
He was a member of three honor societies: Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Lamda Theta, and Pi Sigma Alpha. He was also a member of the Correctional Education Association, the American Correctional Association, the Career and Technical Education Association, former chairman of the Energy Committee of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, American Legion Post 49 in North Attleborough, and, for over forty years, a member of the North Attleborough Democratic Town Committee.
He is survived by two daughters: Maura Regnier and her husband Gene Regnier, and Meeghan Kummer and her husband Bill Kummer, all of North Attleborough, six grandchildren: William, Peter and his wife Jennifer, Daniel, Mary, Thomas, and John; one sister: Ann VanArnum of San Anselmo, California; one brother John Hoye, MD, of Sudbury, Massachusetts.
A funeral service will be held at the Sperry McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro on Thursday, August 25 with visitation from 10-11 a.m. and a service immediately following in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Attleboro Falls.
