NORTH ATTLEBORO – Elma Underhill, 88, of North Attleboro passed away Friday, January 18, 2019 at The Branches in North Attleboro. She was wife of the late Jay Leroy Underhill, who passed away in 2007 and mother of the late Sarah Elizabeth Underhill who passed away in 2008.
Born June 18, 1930 in Campbell County, KY to Damon Dawson Schnack and Elizabeth Mary Harris.
Elma grew up in Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia before moving to Plainville after marrying Jay June 6, 1953.
Retiring in 1993 to Edenton, NC, Elma and Jay moved to Millbury in 2005. She became the first resident of The Branches of North Attleboro on November 15, 2017.
She graduated from Greenhills High School in Cincinnati, OH in June 1948 and went on to become a secretary for the colonel of the signal corp at the Pentagon where she would meet her future husband, Jay. Raising two children, Elma worked part-time and then full-time at the North Attleboro Gas Company, a family owned business.
Upon retiring to North Carolina, Elma volunteered as a historical walking guide for the town of Edenton.
Survived by son, Jonathan M. Underhill and his wife, Lynn of Attleboro; grandsons Brian Parker and his wife Ashley of Attleboro, Jonathan M. Underhill, Jr. and his wife Anonda of North Attleboro and Matthew J. Underhill of Attleboro.
She was sister to the late Dermot J. Schnack, Elizabeth M. Schnack, George A. Schnack and Sheila M. Schnack.
