Helen Sampson Linley Bigelow, 98, of Plainville and Dennisport, MA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at Morton Hospital in Taunton. She was the beloved wife of the late Howard Ballou “Biggy” Bigelow.  

Born in Attleboro on September 22, 1922, she was the loving daughter of the late former North Attleboro Selectman, Irving H. Linley and Helen (Sampson) Linley.

 Helen spent her formative years in North Attleboro and was a graduate of North Attleboro High School. She later furthered her education, obtaining her secretarial degree from Bryant College.

While growing up, Helen assisted her parents at the family business, the former Linley’s Service Station in North Attleboro. She would go on to marry Howard, her childhood sweetheart and during WWII, she was employed by the United States Department of Defense as a secretary at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

After the war, Helen and Howard came back to New England, settling in Plainville, where they would make their home for the next 75 years.

She was a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star and attended Grace Episcopal Church in North Attleboro for many years. 

In her spare time, Helen enjoyed crafts and most of all spending time with her family, making many memories at their beach house in Dennisport, their lake house on Bungay Lake in Mansfield, and their timeshare in Florida.

She was the devoted mother of Marcia Lee Bigelow Pettengill and her husband John of Attleboro and Mark Irving Bigelow of Leominster, MA. She was the cherished grandmother of Trevor Pettengill of Attleboro and Seth Bigelow of Greenfield, MA and Jaime Bigelow and her husband Chris Chadwick of Cavendish, Vermont. She also leaves 3 great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend, will be held on Monday, December 14, 2020 at 1 PM in the Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro, MA.

Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Rumford, RI where Helen will be laid to rest with Howard, her husband of 75 years.

Visiting hours have respectfully been omitted.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Helen’s memory may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Attn: Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
