Caroline J. “Carol” Matteo 12/18/2020

Caroline J. “Carol” Matteo, 83, longtime resident of Rockland County, NY and Long Island, NY, recently having moved to Plainville, MA, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 18, 2020 at Milford Regional Medical Center in Milford, MA. She battled a progressive autoimmune disease for decades before succumbing to COVID-19.  She was the beloved wife of the late Michael P. Matteo who passed on January 14, 1999.

Born on May 5, 1937 in Queens, NY, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Mary (Bobyk) Sieranski and the adopted daughter of the late Harold and Kate (Bobyk) Russell.

Carol was raised in Brooklyn, NY and Patterson, NJ and was a graduate of Franklin K. Lane High School.

Before retiring, she had been employed as an Executive Secretary and Human Resources Administrator at Orange and Rockland Utilities Company.

Carol had a keen sense of humor and was fiercely independent. She loved music and loved to dance. When younger, she played Mahjongg, bridge and tennis. In her later years, she explored digital photography, photo editing and communing through social media. Having been a New Yorker for most of her life, she subsequently spent time living in Connecticut, and the San Francisco Bay Area of California before moving to Massachusetts in 2018. She also greatly enjoyed international travel, especially her trips to Alaska, Russia and China.

She is survived by her devoted daughters: Sheri Matteo and her husband Christopher Smith of San Rafael, CA; and Michelene Ward and her husband Geoff Ward of North Attleboro, MA. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Nicholas, Micaela, Nathan, Anderson and Luke. She was the dear sister of Catherine Scazzero and her husband Domenic of Oceanside, NY; and Robert Sieranski and his wife Sandy of Woonsocket, RI.

She was the sister of the late Leonard Sieranski and John Russell.

Private funeral services will be held. Cremation will follow the services and Carol’s remains will be interred in Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum in Farmingdale, NY where she will be laid to rest with her late husband, Michael.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, North Attleboro, MA.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association, Inc., https://www.aarda.org/donate/.

  • I worked with Carol at ORU for many years….she was delightful lady with a wonderful sense of humor…We shared the love of the Music of the 50’s & 60’s and could often have a great deal of fun singing a duet. I counted her as one of my best friend at work…truly a delightful lady who always brought a smile to my face. She left our world much better than she found it.. I will think of her often when the radio is tuned to our “Rock & Roll.”

  • A smile comes to mind every time I think of Carol. Her bright eyes full of fun and always dancing. This is how I will remember her. Many fond memories of wonderful parties as well as her CB days and the stories she would tell. Rest in Peace with your love beside you. You are missed!

  • Although I only knew Carol through Facebook, please accept my heartfelt condolences.

  • So sorry for your loss!  I only met Carol a few years ago on a senior bus trip to Yale. Sitting across the aisle from her, we became fast friends and I always thought how I would have loved to have met her long ago. We had a wonderful fun day, and I tried to recruit her to join my Mah Jonng group, however she graciously declined (her friend Teri Krug did however).  We remained friends via Facebook and I so enjoyed her unique, uplifting, fun posts!  She also invited me into her group, the Magic of Music, which I loved!  So here I am teary eyed writing this, so I can only imagine how her family & close friends feel.  Thank you for informing me and I pray she rests in peace ? and everyone finds comfort in the wonderful memories you have of this remarkable woman!!   Sending hugs & love,  ❤️??.
