Jane Wiegand 07/17/2018

JANE TAUBERT WIEGAND, 80, of Attleboro, MA, and formerly of Barrington, RI, died Tuesday, July 17, 2018 after a brief illness.

After graduating Scarsdale High School in 1955, Jane studied mathematics at Cornell University. Immediately after graduating in 1959, she began her 44-year professional career at IBM, first as a “Systems Service Girl,” then later as a Systems Engineer working on tabulating equipment and large systems like the IBM 360. After settling in Barrington, RI, with her husband Francis Joseph Wiegand, Jr., she spent her career working with RI-area accounts like Old Stone Bank, Trifari, Raytheon, Bostitch, Newport Navy Base, and Citizens Bank. During the Y2K crisis, she became known as the “Northeast Expert on COBOL.” Before retiring in 2003, she worked on IBM’s Tech Line solving highly technical customer challenges around networking.

She was highly active and loved the outdoors. She learned to ski at age 30 and never stopped, even completing four ski trips a few months before becoming ill. Bitten by the skiing bug, she taught her daughters to ski as soon as they could walk. Winter weekends were spent skiing with her daughters whom she would transport, along with a friend each, to Vermont in her convertible Mustang. When she couldn’t ski, you’d find her biking, hiking, sailing, or at the beach. After the death of her husband and her retirement, she spent the winter months gypsying around the West looking for the best skiing with her beloved partner, Neil Cronquist, who died in 2009.

When she wasn’t working, being a loving and supportive mother, or doing something active outdoors, she was volunteering her time to help others. She served several terms as PTA treasurer and president at various Barrington schools and was a member of the Barrington Committee on Appropriations. A longtime volunteer at the Women’s Center in Providence, she was committed to helping battered women and their children start a new life. During her lifetime, she was a participant in many scientific or drug research studies, hoping to make the world a better place for future generations through scientific advancement.

She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Couchon and her husband Tyler Couchon of North Attleboro, MA, her daughter Julia Wiegand also of North Attleboro, MA; her grandchildren Anna Couchon, Lucas Varosky, Sara Couchon, and Eva Varosky; her sister Susan Taubert Friberg; her nieces Kristina Mangelsdorf and Mary Wilson; her nephew John Friberg, three grand-nieces and two grand-nephews, as well as many dear friends including her treasured companion, Irwin Lurie, and her long-time friends Elaine and Jeff Phillips, and Paula Capello.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 29 at 2 p.m. at the Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro.  At the conclusion of the celebration, visiting hours will be held in the funeral home until 5 p.m.
