NORTH ATTLEBORO - George Owen Johnson, Jr., age 57, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2018, after a courageous battle against cancer. He was the son of Captain George O. Johnson, USMC, Retired, and the late Donna M. (Puccio) Johnson.
George was born on July 20, 1960, in Waterbury, CT, and was a proud North Attleboro HS graduate, class of 1978, where he was the beloved student manager of several varsity teams. One of his most prized possessions was his 1974 Football Super Bowl Championship ring.
After earning his degree from Becker Junior College, George eventually began his 31-year career at the Hockomock Area YMCA, where he worked in various departments and program areas: membership, childwatch, fitness centers, sports and aquatics, school age childcare, summer camp, teens, facilities and the Integration Initiative. However, his favorite role was teaching swimming lessons to children of all ages and abilities.
George was a devoted supporter of the North Attleboro HS Red Rocketeers, and an ardent fan of professional wrestling and other major sports. His favorite professional sports team was the San Francisco 49ers. Throughout most of his adult life, George participated in men’s slow pitch softball, and he was also a proud member of both the Mansfield Elks and the Massachusetts High School Football Officials Association. George enjoyed officiating slow pitch softball, Pop Warner football, youth basketball and multiple other sports at the YMCA.
In 2016, George was presented the Marge Kraskouskas Legacy of Caring Award for his “unyielding passion and commitment to the mission and values of the Hockomock Area YMCA.” Last year George was honored to offer the opening remarks at their staff recognition luncheon. After speaking eloquently about the importance of the YMCA in his life, George noted that he was a proud member of two families: the Johnson family and the Y family.
The oldest son among nine children, George is survived by his sisters Patty Grosse and her husband, Doug, of Midlothian, VA, and Carol Mureddu and her husband, Rob, of Newport, RI. He is also survived by his five brothers and their spouses: Don and his wife, Patti, of North Attleboro; Jack and his wife, Janet, of North Attleboro; Jim and his wife, Sue, of North Attleboro; Rick and his wife, Erica, of Portland, ME; and Steve and his wife, Lynn, of North Attleboro. In addition, George was the cherished uncle to twelve nieces and nephews, and he was beloved by his many aunts, uncles and cousins.
George was predeceased by his mother, Donna M. Johnson; his sister, Kathleen Ann Johnson; and his nephew, Kyle Johnson.

A funeral Mass will be held in the church on Friday, July 6 at 10 a.m. followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Attleboro Falls.
