HOLLISTON – Helen Clare Traverse Doughty, 99, passed away peacefully on May 6, at Timothy Daniels House in Holliston. She was the wife of the late George Doughty.
Born in Arlington, MA on October 24, 1916 in the historic Jason Russell House to loving parents Frank and Pauline (Hatfield) Clare. Throughout her school years she was raised in Lexington, MA and graduated from the Lexington High School in 1935 with a specialty in secretarial work/stenography where she showed great aptitude in short hand dictation. Helen worked at the telephone company in Boston. She was a resident of Arlington, MA for most of her married life to her first husband George Traverse for 28 years but moved back to Lexington to care for her mother. Helen remained there for 24 years during her second marriage to George Doughty where they resided on Paul Revere Road.
Mrs. Doughty played an active roll with the Lexington Senior Organizations and helped her second husband install Lifeline call systems in the homes of Lexington area seniors. She and George taught a course for “Wills and Trusts Without Lawyers” for many years as part of a continuing educational efforts for seniors. They were extensive travelers and took advantage of programs offered to Lexington seniors. Helen loved classical music especially that made by the Reading Symphony Orchestra based in Reading, MA where she regularly attended concerts for close to 25 years.
Helen is survived by four children: John Traverse of Olympia, Washington; Richard Traverse of Boxford, MA; Paul Traverse of Milford, MA and Dr. William Traverse of West Hartford, CT. Three stepchildren: Susan Locke of Carver, MA; Arlan Doughty of Sarasota, FL and Mark Doughty of Weare, NH.
She will be greatly missed by her 14 grandchildren and her 19 great-grandchildren.
Friends can join the family for a time of remembering on June 4, 2016 at 2:00pm at the West Medford Baptist Church, 59 Boston Avenue, West Medford, MA 02155 continuing on with a service of memory at 3:00pm. Reception to follow after the service.
