NORTH ATTLEBORO – Ralph A. Gilmore, 77, a lifelong resident of North Attleboro passed away early Sunday, April 17, 2016 at home surrounded by his devoted family. He was the loving husband of Donna (Dagosta) Gilmore for 59 years.
Born May 20, 1938 in Attleboro, he was a son of the late Ralph S. and Alberta (Hume) Gilmore.
Ralph was a 1956 graduate of North Attleboro High School and was a US Navy veteran serving from 1956-1962.
He co-owned R.S. Gilmore, Inc. Insurance Agency with his brother and worked there for 43 years before retiring in 2003. He also worked part-time at Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home for many years both while he was at the insurance agency and later in his retirement.
Ralph served as a call fireman for five years in North Attleboro and later was on the Board of Fire Commissioners for 25 years. He loved baseball and after attending Al Somers’ Umpire League School in Daytona Beach, FL he umpired local high school and college level baseball games. From 1974-1980 he umpired for the semi-professional Cranberry League on Cape Cod and volunteered many years umpiring the Little North Attleboro League.
He served on the North Attleboro WWII Swimming Pool committee for 25 years and was a member of the B.P.O.E. “Elks” in North Attleboro for 54 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and was a 4th degree Knight, life member and past Grand Knight of the Thomas P. McDonough Council of the Knights of Columbus and belonged to the Edward Douglas White Assembly.
Ralph was also a member of the former Kiwanis Club in North Attleboro where he served as president.
He was a devoted sports fan and loved the Patriots and Red Sox. He also was an avid 10-pin bowler and played both in leagues and sponsored teams at North Bowl for many years. He loved to golf and was proud to have scored a hole-in-one at Falmouth Country Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children: Mark S. Gilmore and wife Susan of North Attleboro, Rae-Ann Wallace and husband John of Attleboro, Bonnie L. Blanchard and husband David of Naples, FL and Amy Jo Pennella and husband Armando of Greenwich, CT; a sister Judith A. Getchell and husband Gary of Dresden, ME; his mother-in-law Gertrude Dagosta of North Attleboro; his sister-in-law Janice Gilmore of Attleboro; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Michael R. Gilmore, USCG who passed away in 2013, brother of the late Robert J. Gilmore and grandfather of the late James Gilmore, USAF and Jason Gilmore, sons of Mark and Susan Gilmore.
Visiting hours will be held in the Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro on Tuesday, April 19 from 4-8 p.m.
A funeral will be held from the funeral home on Wednesday, April 20 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass in St. Mary’s Church, 14 Park Street, North Attleboro at 10 o’clock. Burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Attleboro Falls.
