I first became acquainted with Doris when she contacted me about something I had written in my weekly" Nostalgia" column appearing in the local paper. I was struck by how impressively she related her childhood and youthful days, and we became fairly regular penpals; Doris's penmanship was remarkable, a lost skill but some of the most beautiful I've seen.
As it turned out, I was a schoolmate and casual friend of Doris is son Russell who passed on much too early, and she wrote me that a beautiful bright red cardinal appeared at her window each morning to serenade her – she interpreted the appearance as a sign from Russell, so each time I wrote a response. I mailed it in an envelope bearing a cardinal stamp and address label. I think Doris took some comfort in that. Such a shame to say goodbye to such a compassionate and beautiful soul – deepest sympathy to the family, friends and loved ones....

My family (the Blood's) will truly miss Doris. She was always there for me and my family and my earliest memories include Doris, Ernie, David, Russell and Ricky. When Scott and I had our daughter Alanna, Doris welcomed her with a beautiful afghan we still have today. My mom has many of her beautiful hand sewn vests and wears them often. I will miss you Doris - you were someone special and you were loved by so many, especially me.
