NORTH ATTLEBORO - Joseph G. Barrette, 95, of North Attleboro passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Mary C. (Zoglio) Barrette for 65 years before her death in 2012.

Born April 24, 1922 in Pawtucket, RI, he was a son of the late Ferdinand and Angelina (Dufresne) Barrette.

 

Joe was a graduate of St. Raphael’s Academy in Pawtucket and then attended New England Technical School for refrigeration and oil burner service. He also took classes at the University of Rhode Island for engineering.

 

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served in the Navy Seabees and was honorably discharged as a machinist’s mate, 2nd class.

 

He worked as an order parts lister for the Grinnell Corp. in Cranston, RI for 15 years before retiring in 1983. He previously worked for Coro jewelry in Providence and Gamino Construction in Cranston.

Joe enjoyed bowling and loved gardening. For many years he canned much of his vegetable garden, so the family had homegrown vegetables and sauces through the year. He also became an avid reader in his retirement and belonged to the Knights of Columbus.

 

He is survived by three children: Rosemary and her husband Joseph Nadeau of Woonsocket, RI, John J. Barrette and his wife Joan of Warsaw, Ind., and Diane M. DiCola of North Attleboro;

8 grandchildren: Gina Cairone, Jonathan Barrette, Jessica Crow, Brendan Barrette, Lauren Voith, Dr. Kristen (DiCola) Markie, Dr. Douglas DiCola, and Nicholas DiCola;

 

15 great-grandchildren: Meredith, Emma, Claire, Liam, Eli, Olivia, Cora, Sophia, Norah, Eloise, Ethan (Bubba), Evangeline, Brooke, Genevieve and Fiona; and many nieces and nephews.

He was father of the late Lt. Col. Deborah C. Barrette who died in 2013 and brother of the late Wilfred “Willy” Barrette, Corine Barrette, Oscar “Eddy” Barrette, Sr. Mectilde “Cora” Barrette DHG, Alphonse “Al” Barrette, Irene Bessette, Sr. Theonie “Tonie” Barrette SSA, Sr. Germaine Genny” Barrette SSA, Ernest “Ness” Barrette, Sr. Ernestine “Stine” Barrette SSA, Ferdinand “Pete” Barrette, Rose Agnes Barrette, Fernande “Nan” Beaucage, and Roland Barrette.

 

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, January 8 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro with a funeral mass at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 120 Nate Whipple Hwy (Route 120), Cumberland, RI at 11:30 am. Burial with Navy honors will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Attleboro Falls.
